The screen freezes and the mouse or keyboard does not respond.

If you are experiencing “freeze” symptoms, possible causes include driver or memory errors, storage device lag, etc. Record the conditions under which the symptom occurs and any recent changes, and then check for software and hardware causes.

Solving Order
We've organized the methods starting with the simplest and least expensive ones. Please check the solutions one by one, starting from the top.

Do you have these symptoms?

  • screen freezes
  • computer freezing
  • The mouse doesn't even move
  • Totally lost

main causes

  • Driver or memory error
  • storage delay
  • CPU/GPU overheating

How to solve

Please check them in order from the top. If the issue is resolved, you do not need to proceed to the next step.

1

First check if your keyboard shortcuts are responsive

You can quickly narrow down the cause by distinguishing whether only the screen is frozen or the entire Windows is frozen.

Difficulty Easy time 2-5 minutes cost 0 won
  1. 1Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to see if the Security screen opens.
  2. 2Once opened, run Task Manager to check for processes with abnormally high CPU, memory, and disk usage.
  3. 3If only the screen freezes, try restarting the graphics driver with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
  4. 4Only when it doesn't respond to any input at all, press and hold the power button to force a shutdown. In this case, any unsaved work may be lost.

confirmation point

If you can use Ctrl + Alt + Delete but the desktop freezes, it is relatively likely that there is a problem with a specific app, Explorer, or graphics driver. After these steps, see if your “freezing screen” symptoms decrease or disappear. If there is no change, check for possible driver or memory errors in the next step as well.

2

Check reliability history and events after reboot

Keeping records of app crashes, driver errors, and hardware errors just before freezing can help trace the cause.

Difficulty Moderate time 10-20 minutes cost 0 won
  1. 1Open 'View Reliability History' in Windows Search to check for errors in the stuck time.
  2. 2Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for errors at the same time.
  3. 3Always note whether the same app or driver name is repeated.
3

Check temperature and resource utilization

CPU/GPU overheating or memory/disk saturation can cause the entire system to freeze.

Difficulty Moderate time 15-30 minutes cost 0 won
  1. 1Check CPU and GPU temperatures before freezing occurs.
  2. 2In Task Manager, check that memory and disk utilization are consistently close to 90-100%.
  3. 3If it only stops at high loads, check the cooling and power conditions first.
4

Update or reinstall graphics drivers

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause the symptom.

Difficulty Moderate time 10~30 minutes cost 0 won
  1. 1Check the device in Device Manager.
  2. 2Check your PC or component manufacturer's site for graphics drivers for your current model.
  3. 3If the problem started immediately after an update, consider rolling back to the previous stable version.
  4. 4After installing the driver, restart your PC.
5

Diagnosing RAM and storage

If complete system freezing occurs repeatedly, you should also check for memory errors or storage lag.

Difficulty Advanced time 30~120 minutes cost 0 won
  1. 1Run Windows Memory Diagnostic or Trusted Memory Scan.
  2. 2Check the SMART status of the system drive and manufacturer diagnostic results.
  3. 3If an error is found, back up important data first and consider replacing the affected part.
